Area of Italy you live in?

Rome

Let us know a little about yourself?

I am married to the most amazing guy ever! I met him on a vacation here in Rome. I am currently attending school at a University in the US as a distance learner.

Why did you decide to move to Italy?

I loved being a tourist in Italy, and when my (now) husband and I met and fell in love, it was hard living in the US and doing the long distance thing. One day while I was talking to him on the phone from my mom's house in Spokane, he just came out and asked me to move here. I couldn't say no!

What type of process did you go through to be able to move here?

Well when I decided to make the move, just came with my tourist visa for three months. Then he proposed so we started on the paper work with that. Now that we are married I am waiting for my Permesso for family motives.

What problems did you run into during the initial process and how were you able to fix them ?

I didn't have really many probelms. We just had to show our marriage license at the questura.

How long have you been here?

I made the BIG move in December 2006.

What type of adjustment problems have you had?

It's really hard for me learning Italian, and I find myself reallyself critizing. When it comes to learning, I am accustomed to catching on quickly. I have repeated level one Italian two times already. Hopefully it will stick one of these days. I also miss just getting in my car a driving where ever I want too.

What do you wish someone had told you before you made the leap?

To not be too hard on yourself. I takes LOTS of time. It's ok to cry and throw the occasional tantrum.

What inside secret could you pass on to others looking to move over?

When you get here try to learn the language as soon as you can and try to find a community of other expats to help you cope with the changes. Don't beat yourself up when you feel overwhelmed.

Do you have any disappointments, things you thought would happen but haven't for whatever reasons ?

I really didn't know what to expect when I got here for good. It's really different living here rather been being a tourist here. You have to let go of everything you know and be a blank page. You are basically starting off as a baby, especially if you don't know the language.

What has changed about you since you have been here ?

I think I have let myself feel more humbled and have slowed down my pace. In the US, I was constantly in school, with friends at work...just busy 24 hours a day. Of course not working here has helped. Sometimes you need to just sit and be with your own thoughts. Italy is a good place to do this, you are surrounded by the most beautiful things and in the presence of such history.

Do you think that you will stay forever?

My husband is in the Italian Airforce. He likes his job and I like it here, so I am sure we will stay.
