Area of Italy you live in?

Le Marche

Let us know a little about yourself?

Happily divorced , 3 children that spend a week with me and the other with their dad. Work fulltime for a smallish company which mainly produces actived charcoal filters (wow!)

Why did you decide to move to Italy?

1992 - I was living in Switzerland - it started to rain so I thought what the heck, I'll go to Italy for the winter where its warm and sunny. Found a job (room and board in exchange for helping out) on a farm. Fell in love with the farmer, got knocked up and stayed.

What type of process did you go through to be able to move here?

Got a Permesso di soggiorno for family reasons, and then got married and eventually got italian citizenship.

What problems did you run into during the initial process and how were you able to fix them ?

To get the first PdS I needed a stamp on my passport showing my entry date so I went to Switzerland for the weekend - at the border (ok I was hitchiking) they wouldn't let me back into Italy because I had no cash and they wouldn't stamp my passport either soooooooooo I ran off to the train station and had to do the ditzy americana "your country is soooooooooooooo bella and please can you stamp my passport so I can show all my friends how cool I am when I get home" flutter flutter . It worked. Dealing with the local police was very trying on my level of tolerance to people that think they are closer to god . They are incredibile rude ... it was very difficult to not explode and tell them to go blow. Getting married I did something at the US consulate - don't remember what but I clearly remember my soon to be husbandbeing scolded at with "if you think by marrying an american you can go and live in the US you are wrong buster" ... ummmmm it was never our intention to move back to the states missy! Getting italian citizenship was a little bit of a hassle only because getting all the required docs meant a trip to the US (which I had already planned so it worked out fine)

How long have you been here?

since 1992

What type of adjustment problems have you had?

I'm adjusted and can laugh most things off. Luckily I have a great ex so those few things which I haven't been able to adjust to he deals with - the schools and doctors for the kids.

What do you wish someone had told you before you made the leap?

I didn't leap into anything -it was(is) just the way my life went ( I never had any dreams, intentions , or desire to move to Italy or even Europe) if I had to do it again I probably would

What inside secret could you pass on to others looking to move over?

Just do it if you want to. Don't worry. If you are going to have a baby with an italian , marry the guy -It will make your life much easier. Play dumb when you need to. Never take no for an answer - just keep trying - sooner or later you will find someone that says yes or signs whatever the document is you need.

Do you have any disappointments, things you thought would happen but haven't for whatever reasons ?

nah ...

What has changed about you since you have been here ?

3 kids and 14 years will change a person regardless of where she lives. I think I'm more anal about mealtimes and food than I would be if I were in the States.

Do you think that you will stay forever?

no... but I still have a few years to decide.
