Italian Universities are part of the educational system of the Italian Republic and are governed by the State. Foreign students can be enrolled only through the competent Italian Consular Office. No other organization in the United States, dealing with the preparation of students for University courses abroad is in any way affiliated with the Italian Government or in a position to grant or guarantee admission to Italian Universities.

American students who wish to be admitted to Italian Universities, either as regular students following a full program leading to a degree, or as special students taking only a few courses (corsi singoli) for only one year, must apply through the competent Consular Office and NOT to the Universities directly.

Each student can apply to only one course, chosen among those listed by each University ("contingente"). The list can be consulted on http://sito.cineca.it/strutture/struttura.html.

In order to be eligible for admission to the various Departments (Facolta'), except to that of Medicine and Surgery (for which there are special requirements), the student must:

have completed at least two years of College, with a minimum of 60 credit hours and a 2.92 g.p.a.;

have obtained admission to the third year of College in the U.S. ("junior"); or, have obtained admission to the second year of College in the U.S. and have passed four different "Advancement Placement" on subjects related to the course of study; Important: Only those with 18 years of study in the United States (B.A. and M.A.) can enroll in courses leading to the Italian "Masters Degree" of II level. Students should check with the University for the course date and apply within that time at the competent Italian Consulate.

have adequate knowledge of the Italian language. Prior to complete matriculation the candidate must pass a language proficiency exam at the University to which the candidate has been assigned. For the 2004-05 academic year the exam is scheduled for September 1, 2005.

N.B.: As an alternative to the test, the Universities may accept a certificate issued after at least one year of an Italian language course at the following Universities: III Universita' degli Studi di Roma, Universita' per Stranieri di Perugia e Universita' per Stranieri di Siena, or from Universities that offer courses of Italian in adherence to the Convention with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the basis of art.46, comma 3, D.P.R. 31 agosto 1999, n.394.

The Italian Cultural Institute of your jurisdiction may also issue the required certifications required by the above mentioned Italian Universities.

APPLICATION

The student must submit the following documents to the competent Consular Office between April 18 and May 18, 2005 for Degree Programs (Programmi di Laurea, Laurea Magistrale a ciclo unico e non, and AFAM) and for students submitting application for "Corsi Singoli" by August 30, 2005 for the first semester and by December 31, 2005 for the second semester:

"Domanda di Preiscrizione" (Form A), an admission request form to only one Italian University and Degree Program, completed in the original plus two copies, and signed before the competent Consular Office;

original High School diploma and official copy of the transcripts signed by the principal/registrar and bearing the School's seal with APOSTILLE; Note: Those students who have a diploma of High School (secondary education) from a Country other than the USA must supply a "dichiarazione di valore" issued by the competent Italian Consular Office in the Country where the diploma was obtained.

official statement from the candidate's College or University stating that they have completed 2 years of study, with a minimum of 60 credits, and have obtained admission to the third year of University study ("junior");

official copy of the transcripts, signed by the registrar and bearing the seal of the College or University with APOSTILLE;

original Bachelor degree, if applicable, with APOSTILLE; N.B.: the original High School diploma, original Bachelor diploma and official transcripts, must submitted to the Office of the Secretary of State for the State in which they were issued for the application of the required "APOSTILLE" (in accordance with the Hague Convention of 10/5/1961). In order to obtain the "Apostille", the school official's signature must first be authenticated by a notary public. Please note that neither a parent, nor an exchange program coordinator, nor the student him/herself may attest that the document is an original or a copy and then have his/her signature notarized, and then legalized with an Apostille. This would be a waste of time and money because THE AUTHENTICATED SIGNATURE MUST BE THAT OF THE SCHOOL OFFICIAL WHO SIGNED THE DOCUMENT.

the aforementioned documents must be accompanied by a translation into Italian and presented in three copies (one original plus two photocopies). All translations must be complete, accurate, and clearly typed. Translations of transcripts must show the grades exactly as they are on the originals (A, B, C, etc.);

two passport size photographs, of which one must authenticated by the competent Consular Office.

"Dichiarazione di Valore" on High School Diploma and Bachelor's Degrees, issued by the competent Consulate.

The deadline and requirements are mandatory; no student, under any circumstances, will be admitted without complying with them.

Classes begin in November and last until late June.

Students must obtain a student visa prior to leaving the U.S. for the language exam scheduled for September 1, 2005. Please note that VISAS will not be issued until the students receive the official ACCEPTANCE LETTER from the University, through the Italian Consulate, and definitely not before August 22nd, 2005. For further information, please check with the competent VISA Office.

The admission exam for Architecture Courses is scheduled for September 2, 2005. The admission exam for Courses in Scienze e Formazione Primaria: is scheduled for September 2005.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ADMISSION OF AMERICAN STUDENTS TO ITALIAN ACADEMIES OF ART, OR PERFORMING ARTS, AND CONSERVATORIES OF MUSIC

Between April 18 and May 18, 2005, foreign nationals with educational credentials received from a University or other specialized institution of higher learning outside Italy may submit to the Italian Mission in their country of origin an application for pre-admission (Form F) to a degree program of specialization at select Italian universities where a specific number of slots have been set aside for foreign studies.

Form F (original and two copies), which has to be signed before the competent Consulate, is to be accompanied by the following documents (one original plus 2 copies):

original University degree;
original associate degree or other post-secondary certification obtained from an institution other than a University that qualifies student to pursue university level studies, in all cases the certification must have been obtained following a period of education of at least 12 years;
original certificate issued by an authorized academic authority that attests to the exams passed and contains a detailed list of the coursework and lecture/praticum hours required in each discipline to obtain the degree/certification in a) and b);
the preceding documents must be accompanied by a translation into Italian (each in three copies). All translations must be complete, accurate, and clearly typed. Translations of transcripts must show the grades exactly as they are on the originals (A, B, C, etc.);
all original documents must be notarized by a Notary Public and accompanied by the APOSTILLE;
two photos (one authenticated by the competent Consulate);

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION OF AMERICAN STUDENTS TO ITALIAN MEDICAL SCHOOLS

To be eligible to study in the Department of Medicine and Surgery at an Italian University, foreign students must:

possess a Bachelor degree (B.A. or B.S.) granted by an accredited U.S. College/University and have graduated with an overall grade point average of 2.92;

have completed, upon graduation, the required pre-medical courses: 12 credits of biology, 12 credits of chemistry (organic & inorganic), 8 credits of physics (completed in at least 2 courses equivalent to elementary physics I and II), all courses with at least a grade point average of 2.92;

have obtained the minimum eligibility requirements for admission to most U.S. medical schools.

All foreign students are required to demonstrate knowledge of the Italian language and culture in order for them to take courses at an Italian University. This knowledge will be verified by means of a language proficiency exam, which will be administered at the University to which the candidate has been assigned. For the 2005-06 academic year the test is scheduled for September 1, 2005.

All candidates will be required to pass an admissions exam for the field of Medicine & Surgery, Orthodontics, Dental Prostheses and Veterinary Medicine. The admission exams for the aforementioned fields have been scheduled as follows:

Medicine and Surgery - September 6, 2005;

Orthodontics, Dental Prostheses тА?September 5, 2005;

Veterinary Medicine - September 7, 2005

Italian Authorities must ascertain whether the applicants meet all the requirements for admission. The applicant must, therefore, submit:

the usual letter of recommendation of the College, pre-medical committee or 2 letters from the heads of the Science Departments;

the Association of American Medical Colleges' MCAT score report;

a money order for $110.00 payable to the Institute of International Education in New York (809 United Nations Plaza) which will evaluate the academic credentials of the candidate.

APPLICATION

CERTIFICATION OF ORIGINAL SCHOOL / ACADEMIC DOCUMENTS - (APOSTILLE)

The Italian educational system does not accept school/academic documents mailed directly from the issuing American school/university in sealed envelopes as proof of authenticity.

The Italian Government and its agencies comply with the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961 (approved by the United States of America on October 15, 1981) that requires documents originating in a participating country be accompanied by the apostille of the Secretary of State to satisfy the requirement of authenticity. The apostille actually certifies that the signatures of officials appearing on the original document are true and legitimate. In this manner all documents issued in the United States, if accompanied by the apostille of the Secretary of State, are recognized as authentic in Italy.

Original school/academic documents (i.e.: Final Report Card, High School Graduation Diploma, High School Transcript, Bachelor of Art Degree, Bachelor of Science Degree, Master's Degree, Ph.D., Academic Transcripts) should bear the signature by hand of the Registrar or any other School/University authority in charge of student records and the authentication of this signature by a Notary Public.

Once the Notary Public has authenticated the signature of the school official on the original document, it can be mailed to the appropriate office for an apostille (see attached addresses). It some cases it may be necessary to obtain the certification of the county clerk before an apostille can be issued, so it is advisable, once you have the notarized school document, to call the office of the secretary of state to find out if it can be mailed directly to them or not. When the time comes to mail the document to the Secretary of State, include a cover letter specifying that you are requesting an apostille for use in Italy, your payment for the apostille, and your return address.
